Lost Lab and Owner are Re-united!
In this third and final chapter (blog post), there is a happy ending, and my Basset Hound, Happy, was happy about that. The lost black lab camped out with us for the weekend. Austin was growing fond of the lost pet and hoped that I would not be able to connect with the owner as he has been asking for another dog for 2-3 years. The low to the ground Basset has never been quite what he wants for a dog – he wants a large, rambunctious, roll and tumble dog to expend some of his energies with. Meanwhile, I continued with my research and endeavor to restore this very nice dog to its owner. Multiple attempts to reach city animal control/ “dog pound” were to no avail, especially on the weekend and reaching the voice mail with NUMEROUS automated options got old fast. The rabies tag had the name
Kayaking in January?
Well yes, as a matter of fact! Given the mild weather that we have been enjoying through the winter (so far), almost all things water related are still possible in eastern NC. It has been awesome to still be out of doors on some days in shorts and flip flops, absorbing the air, wind, sun and as it happens, floating on the New River. My husband Tim spent New Year’s Day (afternoon) kayaking with a friend, who had never kayaked before. What a treat! And, you know what they say – whatever you choose to be doing on New Year’s Day will at least be a sign of what you will be doing for the rest of the year. You can’t make a better choice than paddling and skimming peacefully and reflectively along cool calm waters. Some modifications are surely required to be on the water in January even if
New Year, Old Friends
Great tidings! Happy New Year! It is 2012 – amazing. It seems just a flash ago that we celebrated the new millennium. We usually don’t plan too much in the way of New Year’s celebrations, preferring to be cozy and safe at home, as in, off the roadways. The year 2000 however, was an exception in that we traveled up to our hometown Greenville to celebrate with old school mate friends of mine at a party in a big barn at their house out in the countryside. The kids were small then and were snug at the farmhouse with grandparents while we adults stepped out. Twelve years later they are teenagers on the move and with New Year’s plans of their own, oh boy! A pile of teen girls planned an enormous party, apparently well attended by close to 100 of them. It was supervised by a group of brave
We Made Thimble Cookies
Home made baked goods have been a long time tradition in our family, especially at Christmas as I imagine it also has for many of you. It seems that over the years, we, the women have our favorites narrowed down and generally focus on creating about 3-4 all time best loved recipes. Last year, I shared our beloved Christmas green punch recipe. It is easy, fun and delicious and the kids have grown accustomed to having green punch at Thanksgiving and Christmas – it is a ritual that they all expect and look forward to. Yes, we enjoyed the yummy Christmas green punch once more on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Another great tasty family regular is our Thimble Cookies. I can remember eating Thimble cookies all the way back when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. (and that was quite a while ago folks!) My grandmother made
When Family Dwindles
Life marches on in a very dynamic, twisting and turning, evolving, ebb and flow sort of fashion. Much is unpredictable and yet change is certain. Christmas holidays have a way of forcing reflection of life and things past and present, and even to a degree, the future. Thinking of the past takes center stage I think as the holidays can bring back memories of childhood, the family home, the family farm, old traditions, old friends and just they way we “used to do things” at Christmas. Only a blink of an eye ago, my three teens were all little tots, running around busy as bees, squealing in anticipation of Santa’s arrival. Often we would pack up and head out to the farm to Grandma and Grandaddy’s house and enjoy all the great things Grandma would cook. We would have the long time traditional Christmas green punch, home made cookies and
