Summer Plans
We are in the process of deciding my daughter’s summer intensive plans. Her auditions went well and now she must choose which school to attend. Either way, she will be away during the summer for at least four weeks. This summer will be the third in a row that she will be away for so long.
However, for the past two summers, she has been in North Carolina and I could visit her whenever I wanted or whenever I felt she needed a mom’s comforting ear and shoulder. More than likely, this year she will be in Texas. That’s a bit too far for me to just get in the car and travel for an afternoon’s visit. We have not worked out any of the details yet because she still needs to make her final decision. She has one more week until she must decide. We are discussing all her options and are trying to choose the path that will be best for her future. There is so much to consider and so many decisions to make.
Of course my concerns are the same as her concerns as far as the quality of her dance training. But, as a mom, I have many other concerns that she does not think about. Of course, my main concern is her safety, both physical and emotional. This type of training takes a major toll on the body physically because of the constant dancing and also emotionally because of the constant pressure to perform. However, I am probably most concerned about her general safety. When your kids are young, you teach them about “stranger danger” and hope that your message has been committed to their memory. Does a fourteen year old think about “stranger danger”? A mom sure does!
How do you handle your children being away for a long period of time? How can I best prepare my daughter for this summer?
