Tia Bandavanis

My name is Tia and I'm very excited to join the Realteen team. I am a fun-loving, caring, and colorful person. I begin and end everyday with a smile. There is only one man in my life and that is my 15 yr. old son John. It's been my job to raise my son from a young age through his teen years. I am a single mom and I feel as though I have done my best to help my son become a responsible young man. I was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the Maryland and D.C. area. I moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1992. I now consider myself to be a native. I miss family dearly but find ways to visit often. My home and heart is here in Onslow County. This is pretty much due to the fact that I have raised my son here and found it to be a great place to live. I currently teach preschool at a local preschool. I have been teaching for over 20 years. I love children of all ages and could not imagine myself doing any other profession. I enjoy outings with my son to the movies, watching football, visiting local spots such as the Lynwood Park Zoo, going to the beach, and canoeing along our local rivers. I look forward to writing and reading the blogs. I feel this is a great opportunity to explore my parenting role and others. Parenting my teen son has been very rewarding and challenging. However, I have learned that being an effective parent is about learning and growing along with my son!

What's your favorite movie about family life?

They made a movie of it, you know.  Parenthood.  That is the actual name of the movie, too.  It stars Steve Martin.

I put a DVD of it in my cyber-shopping cart just before I checked out.  A Christmas present for me.  I happen to love this movie.  Not only because it is so funny but on many levels, it is true-to-life.   The depiction of not-so-perfect families is reassuring in a way.  Also, there is a fair treatment of how the best intentions and love of a parent can still fall a little short.

I think what I like best about it is it’s a movie about parents trying.  Trying to be good spouses, good caretakers, good mothers and fathers and sometimes getting it right and sometimes not.  And we all have those days when we feel competent raising our kids and other days when we can’t seem to figure out where we went wrong.

I don’t know if put in the situations the movie revolves around if I would make the same choices that the parents in the movie make but it is good food for thought.  And the ending motif of a roller coaster ride is spot on.  Because parenthood can be like a roller coaster – there are ups and downs, twists and turns, moments of calm and moments of sheer terror.  When you have kids time can go by steadily, then suddenly speed up.  It can be exhilarating and often hard to describe to those who have not experienced it.  And certainly not for the faint of heart.
