Tia Bandavanis

My name is Tia and I'm very excited to join the Realteen team. I am a fun-loving, caring, and colorful person. I begin and end everyday with a smile. There is only one man in my life and that is my 15 yr. old son John. It's been my job to raise my son from a young age through his teen years. I am a single mom and I feel as though I have done my best to help my son become a responsible young man. I was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the Maryland and D.C. area. I moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1992. I now consider myself to be a native. I miss family dearly but find ways to visit often. My home and heart is here in Onslow County. This is pretty much due to the fact that I have raised my son here and found it to be a great place to live. I currently teach preschool at a local preschool. I have been teaching for over 20 years. I love children of all ages and could not imagine myself doing any other profession. I enjoy outings with my son to the movies, watching football, visiting local spots such as the Lynwood Park Zoo, going to the beach, and canoeing along our local rivers. I look forward to writing and reading the blogs. I feel this is a great opportunity to explore my parenting role and others. Parenting my teen son has been very rewarding and challenging. However, I have learned that being an effective parent is about learning and growing along with my son!

Another Show We Love

Well, well, well…you all know that our favorite pastime is watching the show, Glee. Two weeks ago, we ran across a show called, The Sing Off, which is just like Glee but it’s live. Can you all imagine the excitement when we saw the previews? We were sitting at home for the past two Mondays waiting on pins and needles for the show to come on. I know you all think I’m a little crazy, but it is so rare that we all can find a show that all of us likes and wants to watch together.

We came to love a group called Committed, who was previously a gospel group. Two weeks ago we watched them make it to the finals and when that was announced, we let out the shout heard around the world. Soraya, Kiki, and I were hanging on to every word Nick Lashay said Monday night leading up to the finale of The Sing Off. Committed was our favorite to win, but Street Corner Symphony was our second favorite to win.

It was down to four groups, all we cared about was if Committed and Street Corner Symphony were going to make the finals. Soon, our worries were over and the two groups we loved the most made it to the finals. Now comes the fingernail biting. I felt like I was watching the Superbowl and all my favorite team needed was a field goal to win. Finally Nick opened up the envelope with the winner’s name, and of course he paused for it seemed like a life time, then he yelled out Committed! Kiki jumped off the chair and did something like what you would see in a Holiness church. She started this shout kind of thing. Ray was on the chair, since she had just finished playing a game, all she could do was wiggle her foot in excitement, I thrust my fist in the air and all of us sounds like a bunch of hyenas hollering.

I was so happy for them as if they were my own children. I feel as though God has something great in store for them and I can’t wait to see them on the big circuit. I hope to see Street Corner Symphony as well. Those guys were just phenomenal! Man I can’t hardly wait til next season. Yall will have to tune in. Be breezy family and enjoy this clip from the show:

You are a good woman to sit and view TV with your kids which helps to ensure a little censorship and create a time of just togetherness with something they love. Since my husband nor I like TV at all, we sort of miss out on that type of time together with them, although we are always nearby and check in frequently to inquire about what they are viewing. Stay involved!
