Football on Fridays
Two Fridays ago marked the beginning of football season at Onslow County high schools. So, guess where I was? If you guessed I was sitting in the bleachers, you’re right. It was a beautiful night, not too hot and no rain in sight. It was a great way to start the season.
Now, I will admit that as a cheer mom, I sometimes forget there’s a game going on out there on the field beyond my daughter and her teammates. And I’m not the biggest follower of the game in general, so I frequently have no idea what’s going on. I figure that’s Mark’s job. Every now and then I have to ask him what’s up on the field.
I wouldn’t want you to get the wrong idea, though. I am paying attention to what’s going on at the stadium. I’m watching all the kids come and go and noticing who’s hanging out with whom. And I’m chatting with the other parents around me and getting the low-down on what’s going on around the school and what the upcoming events are. I frequently find out about some assignment or another in one of the girls’ classes when I’m sitting in the stands at a game. And it’s not uncommon to find out about some project or another that the parents need to work on to help the team or a class in some way.
But at Friday night’s game, I spent most of my time watching Katie and her team cheer and just enjoying seeing how much fun they were having. I loved watching her relate to the girls I got to know last year and also seeing the relationships growing with the girls new to the team this year. They really are a nice, fun group of girls.
For the next couple of months you’ll find me sitting in the bleachers every Friday night, rain or shine. For me, it’s about so much more than the game going on out there on the field. It’s about the whole community coming together to share in the traditions of the game. It’s about celebrating kids working together toward a goal. It’s about friendship and teamwork. I can’t think of anyplace I’d rather be!
