Tia Bandavanis

My name is Tia and I'm very excited to join the Realteen team. I am a fun-loving, caring, and colorful person. I begin and end everyday with a smile. There is only one man in my life and that is my 15 yr. old son John. It's been my job to raise my son from a young age through his teen years. I am a single mom and I feel as though I have done my best to help my son become a responsible young man. I was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in the Maryland and D.C. area. I moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1992. I now consider myself to be a native. I miss family dearly but find ways to visit often. My home and heart is here in Onslow County. This is pretty much due to the fact that I have raised my son here and found it to be a great place to live. I currently teach preschool at a local preschool. I have been teaching for over 20 years. I love children of all ages and could not imagine myself doing any other profession. I enjoy outings with my son to the movies, watching football, visiting local spots such as the Lynwood Park Zoo, going to the beach, and canoeing along our local rivers. I look forward to writing and reading the blogs. I feel this is a great opportunity to explore my parenting role and others. Parenting my teen son has been very rewarding and challenging. However, I have learned that being an effective parent is about learning and growing along with my son!

A Close Call…With a Brick Wall…Part 1

Let me just start out by saying that my oldest teenager Kass, 16, is somewhat more proficient wielding a paintbrush than operating a motor vehicle. That should set the backdrop here.

Technically she should have her drivers license, being that she turned 16 in April, but she is still functioning with a driving permit at this point since she falls into the category of teens that I wrote about in a previous blog post – those who turn 16, meet criteria for getting a license, but for one reason or another have not gotten their license and are not driving independently. Well, Kass falls into that group of license eligible teens. In her case, God bless her, it is probably best for all mankind at this point.

Back to the brick wall incident…there we were, with Kass at the wheel here in town on a busy afternoon recently. We were in the suburban, a relatively heavy, safe, even formidable machine. My son Austin and a friend were in the backseat, I in the front, advising Kass, the driver. The Italians were still here and I thought – let’s pop by the Seafood Center for some shrimp for dinner – so we did – POP by, that is.

Upon arriving there, through very busy traffic, no less, we saw a prime parking space right up front by the very large glass window and very large brick wall. Kass pulled in like a champ towards the very large concrete parking space “marker” ( for lack of knowing exactly what those things are called). She attempted to push down “hard” on the brake but instead “lost her footing” and slammed down on the accelerator!! By the way, just at that moment, I had bent over to retrieve my wallet from my purse – so when I felt the lunge, I quickly looked up, to see nothing but Brick Wall in front of me – not to mention the glass window – with people on the other side, staring wild eyed at the oncoming hefty suburban!!

Want to know what happened next?  Find out in part 2 of my story, coming later this week!
